Machining of superalloys and other difficult-to-machine alloys
Superalloys are metallic materials which are resistant to extremely high temperatures. They are alloys with a complex composition. Due to their properties, they are used, for example, in medical technology and aerospace engineering.
What makes superalloys so unique, however, becomes a problem during machining. For example, the low thermal conductivity of the alloys means that heat generated during cutting is hardly dissipated at all. Besides, the heat development leads to a structural change with further hardening of the material (work hardening). Superalloys are therefore among the most difficult materials to machine. The tools used are subjected to high thermal and mechanical stress.
